NOH - Not Only Hair

Date:June 2, 2015 9:09 pm

On Sunday 7th June from 18:30, The Old Market in Brighton is hosting Not Only Hair, a 100-minute artistic event featuring the collaboration of stylist specialists and performers from around the world across different fields of expression.

Brighton based salon, Simon Webster Hair is hosting the event in conjunction with international colourist and educator, Jesus Oliver (L'Oreal, Bumble&bumble and Toni&Guy), Albana Hair Club and 2Point. The title 'Not Only Hair' reflects that it is principally hairstylists who have organised the event and are presenting their practice alongside other creative outlets, demonstrating it's role as an aesthetic, artistic skill rather than simply a service-industry profession.

SWH Team said about the inspiration for the event: "Through history and across the world, hair has been used to express creativity, social standing and cultural-belonging, from the wearing of the mohawk, to tribal braiding or the use of henna. It was decorated with feathers, beads, colour, flowers and in the case of artists like Frida Kahlo became a trademark portrayal of who she was. Your expression of yourself through your hair is creative and so the skill of styling hair is artistic. Hairstylists are essentially visual-creatives. They're interested in shape and line, texture and form, like any artist. Concepts and problem-solving that apply to sculptors or painters, apply to stylists and colourists of hair in the same way; it's just a different medium. It is also a trade, now a more professional industry than ever, but it is essentially creative and passionate hairstylists can be inspired or influenced by anything. We aim to showcase the artistic side of hairdressing."

From hairstylists to singers, DJs and tattoo artists, the event is about sharing creativity and inspiration across the arts and is the first held by the group in Brighton. A celebration of international talent, Not Only Hair will also host many local artists and performers and promises to be a great first event of many planned for around the world. Brighton-based graffiti artist will be creating and showcasing some of his work through the evening and uber-talented, local singers and musicians Altea and Scutty Lee will be performing with the Etiquette Orchestra.

Tickets are limited to 200 and are available from The Old Market and Simon Webster Hair, priced at £25 or £20 for students.
